Today's the big day! Our Royal Enfields eat up the first miles on a beautiful tarmacked road over hills decorated with an incredible variety of terraced crops, including sorghum, millet and sweet potato. In the early afternoon, we enjoy our first off-road experience on a fantastic windy road.
This morning, we ride on a splendid tarmacked road, hurtling through the heart of the forest. In the afternoon, the road takes us between terraced crops and hypnotic fields of tea before we reach the shores of the immense Lake Kivu.
Today's short leg lets us make the most of Lake Kivu's charms all morning from our lodge nestled in the hollow of a wild, idyllic bay. Kayaks are available and a dip in the lake's clear water is a must! After lunch, our motorcycles take us on a wonderful coastal road with plenty of twists and turns and hills.
We leave Lake Kivu's warm shores behind us and head towards the Volcanoes National Park. When the road climbs up to a 2,500 m pass, we discover the breathtaking view of the “Virungas” (volcanoes in Swahili), including Mount Karisimbi at 4,500 m.
Before lunch, we pass through Ruhengeri to take in all the sights and sounds of its market. In the afternoon, we get back on the saddle for a short, yet stunning leg. Sat on the rooftop terrace, next to the fire and sipping on a mojito, we can enjoy the real star of the show: the sunset between the volcanoes.
Today's an intense leg on beautiful tarmacked roads and smooth tracks. The road climbs the crests of the mountains and we look out over this small country that we have come to love. The locals' smiles warm the cool morning air. Little by little, we start descending and the landscapes shift from green to ochre.
We head off early for a safari in the heart of the park's typical African savannahs on the lookout for the Big Five and alongside a vast network of lakes, home to hippopotami, crocodiles and a wide variety of birds. We pick up our trusty bikes at the end of the morning and head towards Kigali.
