When’s the best time to visit Italy?

You can go on a motorcycle tour in Italy throughout the year depending on the region you visit. A true mix of continental climate in the north and Mediterranean climate in the south, the best seasons to travel in Italy by Royal Enfield are spring and autumn. Touristy regions are calmer than in the middle of summer, the cities are more dynamic and the temperatures are cooler. In Piedmont and the Aosta Valley, winters are harsh with frequent snowfalls. In summer, this region is affected by many storms. Favour spring and autumn to discover the great Italian lakes. In central Italy, the Mediterranean climate is tempered by altitude, with cold winters and summers where temperatures are moderated by the winds. On the Mediterranean coast, the winters are mild and the summers hot and dry, with temperatures getting warmer as you get closer to the far south. If you travel during summer by Royal Enfield in the south of Italy, and are looking for a bit of coolness, favour the reliefs near the plateaus and mountains.

Geography of Italy

The "Italian boot" bathed by the sea and connected to the European continent by the Alps is a territory with a singular geography. Located in the south of Europe, Italy has borders with France, Switzerland, Slovenia and Austria. It’s a country of mountains: the Alps form a large arc in the north of the country with peaks of over 4,000 m in altitude including the famous Mont Blanc and Mont Rose. It is in this region that the great lakes are located: Lake Garda, Lake Como, Lake Maggiore. On a motorcycle tour to Italy, you will explore the Apennines, the backbone of the country stretching from the Po plain to Calabria. Close to Naples is Vesuvius, which rises at an altitude of about 1,200 m. Bordered by the Tyrrhenian, Ionian and Adriatic seas, Italy has almost 7,500 km of coastline. Why not set out to conquer the large islands of Sicily and Sardinia, which are ideal to discover during a motorcycle tour to Italy? Don't miss out on the big cities of Milan, Rome, Bologna, Florence, Turin, Venice, Siena or Naples.

History and culture in Italy

During your motorcycle tour in Italy, you will have the chance to experience the history of a unique european country. As early as Antiquity, Italy has shined with the foundation of Rome in the 8th century BC. At the end of the 5th century, the fall of the Western Roman Empire led to deep divisions in the country. For several centuries until the 19th century, the country consisted of different states attracting the covetousness of neighbouring countries, including France, Spain and Austria. In the seventeenth century, Savoy stands out as the most powerful state in northern Italy. It was not until the second half of the 19th century that Italy began to unify thanks to the kings of Piedmont and Sardinia. Rome became the capital city in 1871. In 1922, Italy fell into dictatorship with Mussolini's fascists in power. Italy entered the Second World War alongside Germany against France and England. It was not until 1946 that the Republic of Italy was proclaimed. In 1957, the country signed the Treaty of Rome, thus sealing the European Economic Community with 5 other countries! After a few tumultuous years of terrorism with the Red Brigades, Italy regained its political stability at the turn of the 19th century.
