What to bring on a motorcycle tour to the Himalayas

A list of the most necessary things you want to have with you.

This is one of the most frequently asked questions from our fellow riders when they’re about to come along on a Royal Enfield motorcycle tour with us. And since the appropriate equipment is a component of a successful journey, here is a list of the most important things you’ll need to bring.
Before telling you what to put in your bag, I’m going to start with the type of bag that you need: A sailor bag would be perfect, or a walker’s bag, but without the steel bars. You can close it with a padlock. Don’t forget to tag it with your address and the address of the Vintage Rides office. You also need a small backpack of 20 litres for the daily necessities, such as your camera, sunscreen, water etc.
Now we can start with what you should put inside that bag:
2 light pair of pants Some shirts, including some with long sleeves to protect yourself from the sun 2 warm sweaters or jackets Sun glasses A hat or cap or anything to cover your head (the sun in the Himalayas can get quite intense) Sport shoes or trekking shoes 1 liter flask A flashlight (don’t forget to bring batteries!) Some sweets or cereal bars

You’ll also need some specific motorcycle equipment:
Motorcycle boots are strongly recommended. Trekking shoes will also do the trick, but be sure they’re waterproof (you might have to cross some water during your motorcycle tour). A warm motorcycle jacket. Synthetic is preferred. A rain suit. It shouldn’t rain, but you never know what mother nature is up to, so it’s better to have one just in case. A pair of Gloves A Helmet (do I really need to specify this one?) A Bandana

You should also have some personal medicine, including the following:
Sun screen Lip balm A broad-spectrum antibiotic Some paracetamol An anti-diarrhea (you might be in the Himalayas but you’re still in India!) Elastoplast Skin disinfectant Bandaged and special blister bandages

If you have packed all of the above, you’re good to go and enjoy the beautiful landscapes of the mighty Himalayas on your motorcycle tour.
For those who are wondering, beds, mattresses and duvets will be provided on site. Other sleeping material is optional and depends on the individual needs of every rider. However, you can bring a sleeping bag liner (recommended) and if you are really cold sensitive, then you can take a warmer sleeping bag, i.e. suitable for -10°C.
And don’t forget to travel lightly, try to stay under 20kgs!
We invite you to have a look at our motorcycle tour in the lower part of the Himalaya: The Sources of the Ganges.
If I missed anything or if you have further questions, don’t hesitate to write an e-mail to info@vintagerides.com
See you on the road
