Our wandering biker still avidly ventures far and wide to discover sublime routes and share his stories – of which he has quite a stock.
A rare monsoon-less region in South Asia, the Eastern coast of Sri Lanka is still unexplored. White sand beaches stretch for kilometers, a lush jungle crawling with elephants, Buddhist sanctuaries imbued with spirituality. Far from the classic motorcycle tours, Sri Lankans are particularly warm hosts. You ride on a Royal Enfield and follow the rhythm of sunrise and sunset. You are not racing against time, always trying to get a few more kilometers done; you are on a holiday. It is time for contemplation and lazing around. A motorcycle tour in a unique Sri Lanka for those who want to ride a few hours in the morning followed by relaxation time on the most beautiful beaches of Sri Lanka.
After being met at the airport, you are transferred to Negombo, your first stop on Sri Lankan soil. Check-in at hotel. Enjoy this small fishing village to take some rest before your long journey.
A short transfer to Colombo airport for your domestic flight to Trincomalee, on the east coast. You reach your hotel where the motorcycles are waiting for you. Free afternoon - ideal moment to relax on the magnificent white sand beach of Nilaveli.
And away you go for a Sri Lankan spin! Cruise around the bay, away from the tourist mainstream, and take the chance to visit the Hindu temple of Koneswaram before perching atop the dizzying "Lover's Leap" cliff. Free afternoon.
An early morning ride along the island's east coast, heading south. An intense feeling of freedom in the saddle as you explore this coastal wilderness. And then it's already time for you to cool down in the ocean.
You continue your descent towards the south by riding along the coast on a magnificent road for approximately 80 km, through lagoons and reservoirs till Gal Oya Park, our stop for this day. In the evening, you will pass by Peace Pagoda “Shanti Stupa”. You will perhaps see wild elephants, which are in the habit of walking along the structure at sunset.
A day of exploration in the wild and exclusive Gal Oya National Park. You will go on a unique safari on Senanayake Samudraya, the biggest lake in the island and observe elephants, buffaloes and crocodiles from your local boat. Bird lovers will be enchanted by this Park, which is home to more than 150 different species. Return to Ampara in the evening.
The last and short ride on the country’s east coast, along the lagoons. You go till Pothuvil, a few kilometers away to the north of Arugam Bay, a charming and wild sandy bay, known for the best surfing spot in the country. The casual setting appeals immediately and the hinterland provides a vast area to explore.
Departure in the morning. Today, a change in the setting, you will go back west to the country’s mountainside area. On the way, you will visit the Buddhist site of “Maligawla”. The last 35 km of the climb up are refreshing and offer splendid views of the surrounding mountains. Lunch at the hotel. In the afternoon, you can do some shopping in the village or if you prefer to walk, you can opt for the trek to Little Adam’s Peak.
Still aboard your Royal Enfield, you follow the road through tea plantations in the mountains in central Sri Lanka. You will visit the small town of Bandarawela and head for Haputale. During the journey, you will enjoy the view over tea plantations and waterfalls; the panoramic view of the valley is splendid.
Today, you continue your journey towards the South by taking a magnificent countryside road that leads you to the threshold of Uda Walawe National Park, one of the most beautiful parks in the country. In the afternoon, give some rest to your Royal Enfield and if you want, hop on to a jeep for a safari. Uda Walawe Reserve is known for the diversity of its animal species: elephants, buffaloes, peacocks, crocodiles, etc.
Take full advantage of this last leg and your Royal Enfield! You head to the south, then the west along the coast. You reach Galle and after roaming around the battlements and parapets of the imposing Dutch fort, you will take the time to wander around in the lanes of the walled city. Check-in at hotel.
Back on the road, to Negombo. Your motorcycling tour in Sri Lanka has come to an end. You're transferred to the international airport as per your flight-departure time.
“I would recommend Vintage Rides to any rider contemplating a guided motorcycle tour. Right from my initial email with Denise, the professionalism and attention to detail was reassuring. Everything was organised for us and our tour guide Josh was fantastic from start to finish. The Royal Enfields were a lot of fun and suited the type of riding we did, the scenery was simply mind blowing and the tour was the best holiday and adventure ever. On top of all this, the value for money was excellent. I will be touring with Vintage Rides again. I did the Trans Himalayan in India.”
“i did the nepal mustang trip in november with my son, a small amount of offroading skills is required. He had only passed his test 3months earlier and had gone a couple of off roading sessions and coped well. The weather was good that time of year, no rain and warm. the tour was better than i'd ever expected with a number of surprises along route. most accommodation was of good standard with some of very good 'the wife could spend a week here' standard. the bikes worked better than i'd expected, not ktm standard but you wouldnt want to be on a ktm allday, and half the appeal was the enfield. i would recommend this trip, so much so i am looking presently to book another trip with vintages rides.”
“We were a bunch of mates from Norwich in the UK looking for something different on bikes. We decided to email 2 company's, Vintage rides and another Aussie outfit based in Nepal. Both company's provided a detailed route in the Mustang Valley in Nepal. The Aussie company was slightly cheaper but the bikes looked older and most importantly sending 20,000 euro's abroad to either company did not appeal to me! However Vintage rides payments are covered via our version of ABTA. The Aussie company payments were not. Easy choice for us. We arrived in Nepal to be greated by the coolest dude at the airport in leather jacket, ciggy in one hand , his name Francois. I can go on and bang on about what an experience the ride was which it was but if you are looking for a company to to have the ride of your life then Vintage rides is at the top of the game. All hotels were fantastic, we bumped into another British company half way up the Mustang valley and I have to say I was glad I had booked Vintage rides. The bike the Britsh had were all sorts of old Royal Enfields and the hotel they were in looked terrible, even the Britsh tour t-shirts they were wearing looked like they were from pound land ! Francois our gide put up with 8 middle aged blokes on a 12 day bender! One hotel we drunk dry !! Brexit was mentioned once or twice but we all decided the French are not so bad after all they can drink as well !! Francois new exactly where to take us ,he has done these trips most of his life. The support crew were 10 mins behind us all the time to fix puncures and fix bikes. Vintage rides is a company that know's what it is doiing and I would have no hesitation in booking another trip (Mongolia) again. A big thankyou to Francois and Denise for organising such a great trip. Roll on next year we are booking again. Doddy.”
