The essence of Sri Lanka for time-poor bikers seeking a trip of amazing variety. Explorers hungry for strong sensations and exotic flavours, you’ll head off on an island treasure trail – a varied itinerary that showcases the country’s terrific cultural and natural mosaic. After a sustained daily tempo, you’ll be rewarded by a more sedate finale, near the beach and fort in Galle. This motorbike trip is the perfect introduction for long-haul adventurers who’ll then set their sights on other Asian destinations.
Ayubowan: welcome to Sri Lanka! You're met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Make the most of this little seaside resort to relax on the beach. You can admire the flotilla of Oruwas, wonderful little traditional fishing boats whose square sails dance on the ocean. Negombo is also known as “Little Rome” due its variety of churches.
Today's the first day of your Sri Lankan motorcycle tour! We start by heading north through tropical landscapes to Kalpitiya peninsula. The road runs along the coast and fishing villages. You reach Puttalam, then, continue between the ocean and the lagoon to Kalpitiya’s wild, unspoilt beaches.
Early in the morning, we go to watch the dolphins dance along Kalpitiya’s shores. After breakfast, we get back on the road and head for the centre of the island into the heart of the Cultural Triangle. You ride through superb landscapes, between jungles and rice paddies peppered with lakes including Balalu Wewa and Kala Wewa, an immense twin reservoir complex.
We’ve got a great off-road day in store today! We navigate alongside canals and wind between rice paddies, discovering another side to Sri Lanka and getting a closer glimpse of its villages and people. Then, we climb the Knuckles mountain range on its meandering roads. The final few miles are out of this world, almost mystical. We cross pine forests and take in the vistas that are unveiled from beneath the tropical mist.
We push deeper into the heart of the island and the Central Highlands: plateaux surrounded by the country's highest peaks. We take a beautiful road that passes close to Kandy and skirts the immense Victoria Reservoir and then climb through the tea plantations’ magical scenery. The mountain road takes many twists and turns until we reach Ella, where the terraced crops envelope the surrounding mountains.
We leave the mountains for a beautiful leg as we head for the south of the island. We make a brief stop at the foot of the Ravana Falls, before continuing along this winding road. The plain gradually comes into view and the landscape changes. We continue southbound on a small country road amid sugarcane plantations and typical Sri Lankan villages. In the afternoon, we go on safari in Udawalawe National Park.
Our last day riding takes us back to the south coast and the ocean. We are still surrounded by nature as we cruise through the countryside and cross paths with many Sri Lankans and their legendary smile. On the way, we stop off at the Mulkirigala rock temples and take in the views over the surrounding jungle and the Indian Ocean.
In the morning, a private vehicle will take us to visit Galle, a magnificent fortified city from the Dutch era. We continue on towards Colombo, where you are transferred to the airport as per your flight schedule. Important: Make sure that you book an evening or night flight.
