Girls Ride

Manon

Manon, Travel designer

Manon discovers the pleasure of the road in West Africa, at the age of 20. Her passion for unknown regions allow her to create itineraries embracing human and cultural experiences.

In 2020, Girls Ride is heading to Indonesia on our Volcano Trail. What to expect? Small roads and tracks on a Royal Enfield, trekking up Ijen and Bromo volcanoes, watching baby turtles hatch and there's even time for a massage at the hotel. We'll also leave the bikes for a day trip to Java to meet Ijen volcano sulphur miners.

D2 / Ubud – Belimbing - 68 miles

This morning, you meet with your tour leader and the other girls of your group. The tour starts gently to the west of Ubud where we discover Bali’s wealth of natural resources. We ride on small roads through typical villages and stop at Sangeh Monkey Forest, before heading to Jatiluwih rice paddies.

D3 / Belimbing - Licin - 93 miles

After a 90-minute ferry crossing, we disembark on Indonesia’s 5th largest island: Java. Just 18 miles to go before we reach our stop for the night at the foot of the Kawah Ijen volcano.

D4 / Licin - 45 miles

We set off this morning to meet some sulphur miners and their families thanks to the private NGO, Ijen Assistance. This NGO's objective is to help families give their children schooling. A morning full of emotions, in contact with local populations.

D5 / Licin – Jember - 80 miles

We take a 2-mile hike up Mount Ijen. From the rim of the crater, we’ll witness the first sunrays of the day unveiling astounding views of the world’s largest acid lake. We’ll also meet many sulphur collectors on our way.

D6 / Jember – Cemoro Lawang - 87 miles

We continue west and take in the Javan landscapes, observing the cultural differences it has with Bali. The last 30 miles pushes us up to an altitude of 2,000 m, passing through authentic villages blessed by the volcanic land.

D7 / Cemoro Lawang – Papuma Beach - Ambulu - 124 miles

We go down into the famous “sea of sand”, dominated by Mount Bromo’s smoking crater. For many of us, this first taste of riding on volcanic sand is bound to make us feel apprehensive to start with, but we'll soon experience an exhilarating, addictive feeling of freedom! We spend the night in the village Ambulu.

D8 / Ambulu - Sukamade - 99 miles

We swap our Royal Enfields for a 4x4 which takes us on a rocky track. We reach Sukamade and our basic but welcoming guesthouse, where we enjoy a traditional meal. As night falls, we go to a virgin beach to see if we can spot the turtles that lay their eggs here all year round.
