Your Motorcycle Tour in Odisha 14 stages - 1,039 miles

lotus temple delhi
D1 / Arrival in Delhi

Your first day is all about a smooth arrival in Delhi: you’re met at the airport and transferred to the hotel in the city centre. Your room is available from noon onwards. You have two options: you can stay at the hotel and rest after the flight or go out and explore India’s bustling capital.

GIRL INDIA ORISSA
D2 / Delhi - Puri - 2h flight

We take an early flight to Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha. Then, we go to Puri, a coastal town on the Bay of Bengal, home to the celebrated Jagannath Temple, devoted to the state’s main God and where only Hindus may enter. In the afternoon, we visit the city by rickshaw, starting at the “Riviera”, popular among Bengali tourists, around the main temple and then on to dinner where we enjoy an Oriya thali.

village man indian orissa india
D3 / Puri - Dhenkanal - 134 miles

We head for an interwoven network of small roads winding through photogenic fields and rustic hamlets typical on the plain. We visit the Sun Temple at Konârak, an architectural wonder listed as a UNESCO heritage site. We continue through numerous simple, charming plain villages until lunch. Then, we follow one of the country's most majestic rivers, the Mahanadi.

river mahadani india orissa
D4 / Dhenkanal - Badmul - 87 miles

We stop off to visit Sadeibereni, where villagers are believed to use one of the oldest metal casting techniques, called “lost-wax” casting. We end the day at the entrance to Satkosia gorge, nestled in the heart of a nature reserve of the same name, where rare gharial crocodiles, freshwater turtles and varied fauna live. With a bit of luck, the Indian skimmers will put on an air show for us.

kutia tribe odisha
D5 / Badmul - Baliduga - 118 miles

Today, we push further into the heart of Odisha through Kandhamal district, a gateway to the native hills. We take small, remote roads and pass through authentic villages on the edge of Satkosia reserve. Then, after the Putudi waterfall, we cross the land of the Kutia Kondhs, a tribe known for their tattooed faces, a trademark symbol that is dying out much to anthropologists’ disappointment.

landscape nature odisha bike nature
D6 / Baliguda - Bhawanipatna - 115 miles

We continue across the charming Kandhamal district and the land of the Kutia Khonds, through lush forests peppered with hamlets and via Ludu waterfalls. It is in southern Odisha where a considerable number of primitive tribes is concentrated, and Bhawanipatna is a beautiful gateway, unknown to the tourist masses.

dongria kondh tribe india
D7 / Bhawanipatna - Kakiriguma - 112 miles

This morning's destination: the west side of Niyamgiri mountain, sacred for the Dongria Kondh, a rare, captivating tribe unique to India, consisting of 12,000 members at the very most, and which is sadly threatened by a mining project. We climb to higher altitudes and ride through hundreds of picturesque hills, where we reach the highest indigenous region: Koraput.

market tribe odisha
D8 / Kakiriguma - Bentalbiri - 62 miles

We visit Goudaguda village in the morning and the local potters. En route, we stop off at a colourful, vibrant local market; anybody would think we had been transported to Africa! For many of the tribes, including the Paroja tribe, the market is their weekly social event.

tribu bonda odisha
D9 / Bentalbiri - 19 miles

This morning, we'll get closer to the most astonishing tribe, the Bonda people, at a local market. Though modernity has made headway, the Bonda people have remained animist and continue to follow social practices that have disappeared almost everywhere else. We relax at the impressive Duduma waterfalls. In the afternoon, we go for a walk near our lodgings in the heart of age-old countryside and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

road lanscape odisha
D10 / Bentalbiri - Rayagada - 149 miles

A long day of magnificent landscapes and farmlands awaits us. We enjoy the beautiful, good condition roads, as well as a number of small rural roads and tracks. We make a quick trip to Andhra Pradesh for lunch (and sample some authentic south Indian food), then cross the beautiful citronella fields before heading up to Odisha's hilly region.

D11 / Rayagada - Rambha (Chilika Lake) - 174 miles

Another long day on the bikes today. We cross the Lanjia Saora tribe’s land, known for their wall paintings. If we’re lucky, we may get the chance to meet a tribal artist who sells their beautiful canvasses. Then, we take to the desert, which proves a real treat: hills and good, wide, well drawn-out, trafficless roads. Finally, we leave the Eastern Ghats and its tribes and head down to the coast, towards the plains and the Bay of Bengal. Overnight stay on the west side of the beautiful Chilika Lake.

sea beach odisha
D12 / Rambha - Chilika Lake - 43 miles

We ride to the southern point of Chilika Lake, with the lake on one side and the ocean on the other, and take in the views of the largest coastal lagoon in Asia. Zigzagging our way across, we take our time to explore this special ecosystem fed with fresh water from the rivers and salt water from the ocean, where the emblematic Irrawaddy dolphins and traditional fishing communities live. Overnight stay between the lake and the sea.

farmer odisha village india
D13 / Chilika - Puri - Delhi - 40 miles

We take a pleasant road back to Puri, giving us one last chance to take in the surrounding countryside and pass Raghurajpur crafts village, the perfect place for a spot of souvenir shopping. After lunch, we head for Bhubaneshwar airport for our flight back to the Indian capital. If we have time, we can visit the ancient Kalinga temples just before our flight.

“Voyage en Orissa magnifique avec Johann. Parcours très bien équilibré dans régions reculées et "authentiques" dans villages traditionnels. Hébergement parfois rustique mais accueil chaleureux.”
