Your Motorcycle Tour in Odisha 14 stages - 1,039 miles

lotus temple delhi
D1 / Arrival in Delhi

Your first day is all about a smooth arrival in Delhi: you’re met at the airport and transferred to the hotel in the city centre. Your room is available from noon onwards. You have two options: you can stay at the hotel and rest after the flight or go out and explore India’s bustling capital.

lord jagannath puri
D2 / Delhi - Puri - 2h flight

We take an early flight to Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha. Then, we go to Puri, a coastal town on the Bay of Bengal, home to the celebrated Jagannath Temple, devoted to the state’s main God and where only Hindus may enter. In the afternoon, we visit the city by rickshaw, starting at the “Riviera”, popular among Bengali tourists, around the main temple and then on to dinner where we enjoy an Oriya thali.

heritage palace dhenkanal
D3 / Puri - Dhenkanal - 108 miles

We breathe in the sea breeze one last time this morning as we head for an interwoven network of small roads winding through fields and rustic hamlets typical on the plain. We then continue on to our destination: one of Dhenkanal’s two royal palaces, which are still owned by heirs. In the late afternoon, we can visit the Mahima Dharma temple, which is unique in India.

river mahanadi odisha
D4 / Dhenkanal - Badmul - 80 miles

We head off to spend the night in the wilderness on the banks of the Mahanadi, the state’s largest, most important river. We end the day at the entrance to Satkosia gorge, nestled in the heart of a nature reserve of the same name, where rare gharial crocodiles, freshwater turtles and varied fauna live. A boat ride on the Mahanadi is scheduled for late afternoon.

kutia tribe odisha
D5 / Badmul - Udayagiri - 118 miles

Today, we push further into the heart of Odisha and its remote, exotic forests through Kandhamal district, a gateway to the native hills. We stop at its heart in Udayagiri, home to several tribes including the Kutia Kondh tribe, known for their tattooed faces. We spend the night with an NGO that works for the village communities. We take a walk to explore village life near our accommodation.

landscape nature river odisha
D6 / Udayagiri - Muniguda - 130 miles

Today’s destination: Niyamgiri mountain, sacred for the Dongria Kondh, a rare, captivating tribe unique to India. It is in southern Odisha where a considerable number of primitive tribes is concentrated. Overnight stay at extremely simple guesthouse, run by an NGO that provides education and training for village women.

dongria kondh tribe india
D7 / Muniguda - Godaguda - 106 miles

We go to a local market to see the amazing Dongria Kondh tribe, but only after visiting their worst enemy: a bauxite processing plant. We make several stops to see what life is like in India’s remote hamlets and villages. After lunch in a local café, we climb to higher altitudes and ride through hundreds of picturesque hills, where we reach the highest indigenous region: Koraput.

bonda tribe odisha
D8 / Godaguda - Bentalbiri - 62 miles

We take a walk to Goudaguda village in the morning and visit the village potters. Then, we head to the land of the Bonda people, another rare and unique tribe. En route, we stop off at a colourful, vibrant local market; anybody would think we had been transported to Africa! We stay overnight at an original guesthouse. Profits from the guesthouse are used to provide education for the indigenous communities.

waterfall odisha
D9 / Bentalbiri - 19 miles

We will get as close as we can to what’s believed to be the toughest, wildest, most fearless tribe: the Bonda people. Though modernity has made its headway, the Bonda people have remained animist, still practice a form of witchcraft and continue to follow social practices that have disappeared almost everywhere else. After a trip to the market, we relax at the impressive Duduma waterfalls.

road lanscape odisha
D10 / Bentalbiri - Rayagada - 143 miles

A long day of magnificent landscapes and farmlands awaits us. We enjoy the beautiful, good condition roads, as well as a number of small rural roads and tracks. We make a quick trip to Andhra Pradesh for lunch (authentic south Indian food), then cross the beautiful citronella fields before heading up to the Oriya hills. A good rest is in call for after this tough day, so we spend the night at a standard, comfortable hotel.

children countryside odisha
D11 / Rayagada - Gopalpur - 143 miles

Another long day on the bikes today. We cross the Lanjia Saora tribe’s land, known for their wall paintings. If we’re lucky, we may get the chance to meet a tribal artist who sells their beautiful canvasses. We have lunch at a local café-restaurant. The desert is a treat: hills and good, wide, well drawn-out, trafficless roads. Finally, we leave the Eastern Ghats and its tribes and head back down to the coast.

sea beach odisha
D12 / Gopalpur - Chilika - 55 miles

We reach the immense Chilika Lake, a special ecosystem fed with fresh water from the rivers and salt water from the ocean, where the emblematic Irrawaddy dolphins and traditional fishing communities live. If you take a boat ride, you can get a more up-close view of this aquatic world, see their special fishing techniques, discover virgin beaches, and with some luck, even spot some dolphins.

farmer odisha
D13 / Chilika - Puri - Delhi - 75 miles

We take a pleasant road back to Puri, giving us one last chance to take in the surrounding countryside before reluctantly having to leave the bikes in Puri. We jump aboard the vehicle that will take us to the airport and drive along a beautiful coastal road to Konark and its Sun Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates back to the 13th century. Then, we head to Bhubaneswar airport and onto the Indian capital.

delhi jama masjid mosque
D14 / Delhi - International Airport
